About the Speaker:
Ellen Strunk, PT, MS, GCS received her master.s degree in physical therapy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1991. Since that time, she has worked in various roles: first as an orthopedic team leader, then as clinical manager for 3 years where she supervised PT, OT, ST services in acute care, transitional care, and outpatient settings. In 1996, she moved to a hospital home health agency to develop and supervise therapy services. Presently, Ellen is a clinical consultant with Restore Therapy Services, a company providing rehabilitation services in long term care, home health and outpatient settings. Ellen has earned her APTA Board Certification in Geriatric Physical Therapy and is a certified group fitness instructor with emphasis in geriatric programming. She co-authored clinical pathways for home health and has lectured on the topics of utilizing clinical pathways, geriatric wellness, physical therapy admissions to home care agencies, restorative nursing, trans-disciplinary treatment strategies in home health, and the prospective payment system. Ellen is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Alabama Physical Therapy Association and currently is Chairman of the State.s Practice and Reimbursement Committee.
Description:
This course is designed to update the participants in current issues involving the interaction of rehabilitation treatment and pharmacology. This course reviews the profile of the typical rehabilitation patient, the common adverse drug reactions observed, the impact of side effects on treatment outcomes, and the problems of polypharmacy. The presentation will focus on drug classes and drug regimens commonly used. This information should enable the course participants to implement general strategies for coordinating and modifying treatment sessions according to the client's drug treatment. It will also provide practical information to assist the therapist in promoting patient compliance with his/her drug regimen and in recognizing potential dangerous side effects and/or decline in drug effectiveness. This course is intended to meet the needs of the intermediate level clinician.
